Mafia is a forum game where there are two teams: Town and Mafia. The town's goal is usually to lynch all the mafia, and the Mafia's goal is usually to kill all the townies. Sometimes there are 3rd parties in games as well.

There are two phases in mafia: Night and Day. During Night, the mafia get to nightkill somebody, whose role is revealed the next day. During Day, the town votes to lynch somebody, whose role is then revealed.

Townies have no special powers. They can only vote once per day. They do not know the roles of everybody else. Mafia, on the other hand, can nightkill somebody each night, and know who their fellow mafia are. However, there are fewer mafia then townies. Power roles, such as the cop and doctor, have other special powers that they can use. See the Mafia Roles thread for more info on power roles.
